DELRAY BEACH – Jacob Kilar, 9, of Greenacres bought a pineapple at a local grocery store then spent three days transforming the spiny fruit into "The King," Elvis Presley. His effort resulted in a $100 bill Jacob said he will put into his savings account.

Jacob was the winner of the first annual "Pineapple Idol" sponsored by Hand's Stationer's. A dozen people entered pineapples in the competition.

And the flavorful fruit was transformed to mimic everyone from Elvis to Bob Marley to Harry Potter. Themed pineapples represented Marti Gras, a Surfer Girl, a princess, a flip flop and a rocket, all of which were on display Thursday May 8 in front of Hand's, 325 E. Atlantic Ave.

A call-in number allowed patrons at Jazz on the Avenue to cast their votes for their favorite pineapples. Hand's employees tallied the votes.

"We received 247 calls," said employee Liz Hughes, who created the "Pineapple Idol" contest.

Kilar's winning entry consisted of Elvis with his trademark black locks, 1970's-era shades and his familiar flattop wooden acoustic guitar.

"You have to host great events to draw customers," said David Cook, manager of Hand's.
