'American Idol' parent CKX agrees to $1.19-billion buyout (UPDATE)

May 19, 2008

CKX Inc., owner of the "American Idol" brand, said Wednesday that it had agreed to a revised buyout offer valued at $1.19 billion from a group led by CKX Chief Executive Robert F.X. Sillerman, called 19X Inc.

The revisions include an increased breakup fee payable to CKX if the acquisition isn't completed by a new deadline of Oct. 31, CKX said.

New York-based CKX will also conduct a new "go shop" period of 45 to 60 days while the company seeks better offers.

19X's offer is for $12 a share. The $1.19-billion transaction value is based on 99 million common and preferred shares outstanding, the company said. 19X would also assume $100 million of debt.

Sillerman, who is chairman of both companies, had offered $13.75 a share when he originally proposed the buyout in June 2007. He reduced the offer May 12, citing a "seismic shift in the buyout world since the time we originally entered into this transaction."

The increased breakup fee involves an additional $500,000 payable in cash and a reduction of the value of any stock used to pay the initial $37 million fee to $11.08 a share from $12, CKX said.

Sillerman would pay CKX 256,016 additional CKX shares as a result of the reduced stock price as part of the breakup fee.

CKX also said that some members of its management, including Sillerman and director Simon Fuller, agreed that if the company received an offer of more than $12 a share, management stockholders would pass on the amount more than $12 to all other CKX shareholders until they had received $13.25 a share.

At that point, all stockholders would get an equal share.

CKX shares gained 26 cents, or 2.6%, to $10.47.

Bid for spot in antiques show

May 31, 2008

MEDIEVAL swords and rare Elvis Presley records were some of the unusual items under the hammer when a BBC antiques show visited Cambridgeshire.

The eclectic mix of antiques were discovered by contestants on BBC One's Cash in the Attic programme before they went to auction at the Arkenstall Centre in Haddenham, near Ely, yesterday.

It is the second time the daytime show, fronted by Lorne Spicer, has filmed in the Ely area after visiting Blyth auction rooms in Ely Market Square earlier this month.

Tim Blyth, managing director of Blyth & Co, who also organised yesterday's auction, said: "It was a really exciting day, with some exceptionally good items and some very lively bidding.

"We had everything from mint Frank Sinatra and Elvis records to 18th Century swords, so there should be plenty of interest for viewers."

Hugh Jarrett former Jordanaires Dies...

Hugh Jarrett (second from right) with the
Jordanaires singing group

May 31, 2008

ATLANTA – A former Gainesville radio personality, Elvis Presley backup singer and emcee at Lanierland Music Park in Cumming has died.

Hugh Jarrett was the bass singer for Elvis Presley’s back up quartet, the Jordanaires from 1954 to 1958. Hugh’s voice can be heard on over 50 of Elvis’ recordings including the $10 million seller Don’t Be Cruel.

During part of his career, when rock 'n' roll was in its heyday, Jarrett was a radio disc jockey, known as "Big Hugh Baby." That was when he was heard virtually coast-to-coast on WLAC in Nashville, Tennessee, and when he worked for WPLO in Atlanta.

Jarrett settled permanently in Atlanta in 1970. His stints in Gainesville radio included time at WGGA, now Sports Radio 1240 The Ticket (like AccessNorthGa.com, a part of Jacobs Media Corp.), as a gospel music disc jockey.

In addition to his radio work, Jarrett dabbled in acting, appearing in the television series, In The Heat of the Night, which starred Carroll O'Conner, and in the made-for-TV movie, Murder in Coweta County, which starred Johnny Cash and Andy Griffith.

Jarrett's death Saturday resulted from injuries sustained in an auto accident March 25. He had been hospitalized since that time.

Beware for fake Aloha belt!

May 31, 2008

Recently, a so-called collector has approached fans and fan clubs around the world in an attempt to sell the so-called “original Aloha belt”. The letter of authenticity states that Elvis threw the belt in the audience, where it was caught by Jack Lord’s daughter. The asking price is 125.000 $US. Apart from the fact that Jack Lord did not even have a daughter, we submitted the pictures to the team of Butch Polston, who acquired the original patterns for Elvis’s belts and jump suits. This is their reaction… so buyer beware!

Hi Peter, thanks for asking. This is a fake. Butch made it several years ago for Joe Battig who said he wanted to display it in a restaurant. He lied to Butch, and made a fake letter to go with the belt and tried to sell it as the real thing. Butch and Kim saw it at a store in Las Vegas that sells memorabilia, and told them it was a fake. Supposedly, the shop took it down. It showed up on eBay about a week ago. Butch took notes from his conversation with this guy. He asked about Jack Lord's family. You can tell by looking at the picture a few things that are certainly wrong.

1. The hooking device on the back of the belt if Butch's own design. Elvis' did not have two loops that would be visible. It had one loop and it was sewn on the the end of the belt.

2. The red stones on the belt would be flat. The big rounded dome is what we use, because the flat "buff top" stones aren't available anymore.

3. The eagles on the belt aren't right. These are ones that Butch had made, and we hold the copyright on.

4. A leather belt wouldn't look that white after 35 years. The studs and chains would be tarnishing too.

The letter says "Elvis took off his belt and gave it to my daughter." Jack Lord never had a daughter, or this belt. So on the eBay auction, they were forced to take the belt off the website because someone told him Jack Lord didn't have a daughter in the question and answer section.

Also, Bill Belew only had Gene make 2 Aloha suits. There were 4 of this style belt made for Elvis. One was thrown at the Hawaii concert, one he wore with the suit until it fell apart, a third was given to Ed Parker, and the fourth was made to be worn with the Embroidered Eagle suit.

We've gotten a lot of questions about this belt recently. If you could, pass some of this information along. It makes Butch crazy when people try to pass his belts off as the originals. It's flattering, but it's not why we're in business. You know how honest Butch is! Thank you for asking about the belt.

Take care,

Virginia

'The King' from Auburn takes his act to the Orient

May 31, 2008

By Maria Chutchian

Global competition gets a bad rap at home, but for Elvis impersonator Robert Washington, it was a chance to bring his act to a whole new hemisphere.

From May 13 to 19, Washington, who lives in Auburn, played at packed 1950s-style nightclubs in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.

"It's a beautiful country," he said. "The culture, the food - I had an idea of what it would be like, but it far exceeded my expectations."

Washington, who has been doing shows around the country for years, said he got the gig through a friend, Mori Yasumasa, whom he met at the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Competition in Memphis in 1992. Yasumasa won the competition that year, a testament to his talent and Elvis' cross-cultural appeal. Yasumasa, who is Japanese, and Washington, an African-American, have kept in touch ever since.

"We've been trying to do this for a couple years now," Washington said of his trip to Japan. "It finally started coming together a couple months ago."

This wasn't Washington's first trip outside the country on Elvis-related business. Last July, he was invited to join 29 other Elvis impersonators in London for a BBC documentary. He was one of only four chosen from the United States. The rest were from all across the globe.

Washington, who is employed at Bath Iron Works, has been competing for prominent Elvis titles for years. Last year, he won the Lake George Elvisfest in Lake George, N.Y., where he will return as a special guest at the end of this month. A couple of years ago, he won the Memphis competition, which he describes as "the best."

"You can only win the Memphis competition once, so I've been doing a lot of traveling since then, doing shows all over the country," he said.

The 49-year-old father of two was born in St. Louis and grew up in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He became a fan of Elvis by listening to records and watching his movies as a child. In 1977, he was stationed in Brunswick with the Marines.

Washington does benefit shows for Special Olympics every October. He performed in Seattle and on a Carnival Cruise earlier this year. In addition to the Elvisfest, Washington will be in Wisconsin on June 13 and will perform at several Fourth of July shows in Maine.

"I think I was a pretty big hit," Washington said of his performances in Japan. "They told me they definitely want me to come back. It's a long trip, but hopefully I'll get to go again."

Elvis gets Las Vegas flight off ground

Image hosted by servimg.com

May 31, 2008

MONTEREY - Although no gambling was to be found, Monterey Peninsula Airport did have a slight air of Las Vegas on Friday.

The occasion? A celebration of Allegiant Air's inaugural flight from Monterey to the casino oasis.

The airline now has three weekly flights leaving Monterey, with jets carrying up to 150 passengers. Flights are at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

An Elvis impersonator and Las Vegas show girl - decked in sequins, rhinestones and glitter - helped round out the casino feel.

The sold-out flight included Marilyn Sullivan of Carmel, who's normally driven to San Jose to fly to Las Vegas.

"I love it," said Sullivan, who was traveling with Judi Marotta of Monterey for the weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday.

She said she decided to try the newly added airline because of the flight's cheap tickets and added convenience.

Added Marotta, "This is in our backyards."

Sabrina LoPiccolo, Allegiant's public relations coordinator, said the airline came to Monterey because it identified an unmet need in passenger travel.

"We've had a great welcome by the community," LoPiccolo said.

Thomas Greer, general manager for the Monterey Peninsula Airport District, predicted the new airline will increase traffic through the airport by 65 percent, considering that Las Vegas is a major travel destination for local residents.

"The community has been asking for this," Greer said.

Subject: Re: A Get Together In Memory Of Phyllis Collas During Elvis Week

Hey there,
I have never posted in here before but I was online searching for a way to reach more people who knew Phyllis. My name is Beth and I am the girlfriend of Phyllis' nephew Brian. we were all blindsided with grief over loosing such a beautiful spirit. I am also a small business owner here in Memphis and my company has gotten together with Marlow's Restaurant and St. Jude and we are organizing a Phyllis Presley Collas Memorial St. Jude Charity Auction at Marlow's on August 11. St. Jude was a charity very close to Phyllis' heart and I KNOW she would be very excited about this. This auction will feature hand signed Memphis/Elvis inspired framed photography, Sun Studio 45's autographed by Jerry Lee Lewis, Autographed records from Sonny Burgess and the Pacers, autographs from beloved Elvis guitar player, James Burton and lots more. Sun Studio will be donating some merchandise and tour tickets. We are trying to negotiate Gibson to donate an authentic Memphis made Gibson guitar as the crowing jewel. Plus we will be auctioning some of Phyllis' personal Elvis collection for St. Jude. 100% of the proceeds have been promised to St. Jude all in Phyllis' name. If we can raise $1000 for them, they will put her name on a plaque at St. Jude in her honor. THAT'S the goal. There will likely be live music as well as a silent auction, great Marlow's food and an open forum to share memories and stories about Phyllis and of course Elvis. The items in the auction will be themed heavily in Memphis/ Elvis/ Music. Please pass this information along TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW that will be in Memphis for Elvis Week and was a friend of Phyllis'. This is a GREAT opportunity to get together and celebrate Phyllis and raise money for a charity that she loved so very much. We are going to try to get EPE to add this event to the Elvis Week 2008 calendar but any kind of additional promotion would be greatly appreciated.

Return of the King

Image hosted by servimg.com

by Wes Helbing

May 28, 2008

Side Elementary School.

Fifty-three years later, the King of Rock is set to return to northeastern Louisiana in the person of Shea Arender, professional Elvis tribute artist who grew up in the area.

Arender will perform his Elvis tribute June 7 at the historic Fiske Theatre in Oak Grove, accompanied by special guest Gerald Lewis, cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis. A portion of the proceeds from this "Legendary Night of Music" will benefit the 5th District American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

So how does one become a successful Elvis tribute artist? Arender broke into it at the age of 12 when he performed on the Commodore Cruise Line of New Orleans.

"Elvis was always a big inspiration to me," said Arender. "His movies and music were clean fun for a child growing up in the '80s. Elvis had his own style that intrigued me from the very first sound, when my mother brought me Elvis' Golden Records at the age of seven."

Arender was also inspired by Anita Wood Brewer, who seriously dated Elvis for several years and later married NFL personality Johnny Brewer.

"Anita Wood Brewer was the mother of my sister in law," said Arender. "When I was growing up, she told me a story that she recalled when Elvis was leaving for the Army. She was right there crying with his mom and dad when he left.

"Elvis picked out a song for her when he was over in Germany in 1958-60, and it was the song 'Soldier Boy.' That song meant more to Anita than any song he recorded because it was directed to her. From time to time when I see her, I sing it for her and she just smiles at me."

Arender has a degree in international business and is also educated in music theory, vocalization, song writing and Classical forms.

"I do a little international business import and export, but I mainly perform all year. If I'm not on the road as the King, I'm writing and recording my own material. I often play rhythm guitar at my concerts, and I play around on drums."

Arender has taken his love for music all over the world. He has found there are Elvis fans in such diverse places as Italy, Brazil and Puerto Rico. Everywhere he goes, the audiences are all shook up.

"I sing Elvis songs as is, and even if the audience can't speak English very well, they still seem to shout out his song lyrics. Elvis appeals internationally because unlike America, they still put Elvis stuff in the mainstream media. For example, even though he's dead, he had his 21st number one hit in England last year."

Arender said his favorite Elvis era to perform is that of the King's televised 1968 Comeback Special.

"That show originally was seen by more than 75 million people when it aired. But I perform more of the 1970s Vegas-style stuff because most people relate to it more.

"My costumes are original replicas of Elvis's suits. Elvis is perceived to be this big, tall person. But our sizes are almost the same, according to what B&K Enterprises (Costume Co.) told me the last time I made an order."

Arender notes a distinction between being an Elvis impersonator and a tribute artist: He is the latter.

"I won a grand championship in Miami in 2002, but I no longer compete as an impersonator," said Arender. "I'm actually a tribute artist, meaning that my show is Elvis influenced, not Elvis copied. My versions of songs may vary in form from his."

Arender has recorded an Elvis tribute album, "American Trilogy," and plans to do shows in Branson, Atlantic City and Las Vegas after his concert here.

"Oak Grove is a neat, historical town and I have a few family roots in it. So I got with Commander Tommy Shoemaker, director of the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home, about the concert. He loved the idea. So a portion of this money will help fund some of their activities, not to mention the concert is free for an organized group from District 5, including towns like Tallulah, Delhi, Rayville, Oak Grove and parts of Monroe.

"We were wanting some gospel music at the show because Oak Grove is a very Christian-focused community. So Gerald Lewis is a blessing to have with us. He will handle the gospel part of the show and play piano like crazy for you."

Asked why he thinks the legacy of Elvis continues to endure, Arender offered the following reflection.

"Elvis is the biggest selling artist of all time. He is the only artist in the history of music to chart hits in every country worldwide. His sound was so diverse, as he recorded in country, rock, jazz, blues, Dixieland and gospel.

"With Elvis there was something for everybody. And he also broke down racial barriers. He was loved by people of all races -- and all ages. Even children are fascinated by his costumes and his stage presence.

"God has blessed our tribute," said Arender. "We have met some wonderful people on our journey."

To learn more about Shea Arender, visit his Web site at www.sheaaselvis.com.

"A Legendary Night of Music" will begin at 7 p.m. June 7 at the Fiske Theatre in Oak Grove, LA USA. Tickets are $10 apiece and may be purchased by calling 318.341.1697 or by e-mail at madisonparish911@bellsouth.net.

SCENE:Making the change

May 29, 2008

They say Elvis Presley died in 1977, but to many, he's still alive.

His face, voice and catch phrases are still known the world over, and he continues to make millions of dollars every year. His songs are still some of the most well-known.

Out of this love for the man and his music, folks known as tribute artists have started making a career out of bringing Elvis back to life.

Two of the world’s best-known tribute artists, Brandon Bennett and Shawn Klush, are making a return trip to the Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival to bring their versions of Elvis to fans.

But how does an ordinary man make the transformation to the King of Rock 'n' Roll?

From Brandon to Elvis
Brandon Bennett, who took home the top prize in the Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival Tribute Artist Competition last year, said he first dressed up like Elvis in high school. His high school choir teacher found he could sing like Elvis.

"It started like a joke in high school, like a dare. I never thought I’d be doing this as a career," the 25-year-old said.

He's been doing it for about 10 years now, so it's becoming a quicker process to turn into Elvis.

"It doesn't take a whole lot of time. Getting my hair fixed probably takes the longest," he said.

His hair is naturally dark brown but he dyes it just a little to get it as dark as the King's.

"It probably takes 10 to 15 minutes at the most," he said. "I always take a shower first, so from that time to I'm done, it's probably 15 minutes."

The Louisiana native said he doesn't like to wear make-up, but wears some so he won't appear washed out on stage.

He either has his Elvis outfits made or tries to find something similar he can transform into it, he said. For example, his "G.I. Blues" outfit is a khaki outfit he found in a store, and he bought patches like what Presley would’ve worn and had them attached to the outfit.

Mentally going from Brandon to Elvis comes from doing his routine over and over.

"I don't have any set rituals," Bennett said. "But if you have your favorite CD you love and you've listened to it 100 times, when it changes to the next song, your brain tells you what the next song is - that's kind of like what happens to us."

From Klush to Presley
Shawn Klush, from Pittston, Pa., won the first-ever Ultimate Tribute Artist Competition put on by Elvis Presley Enterprises last year.

The award recognized what Klush calls a lifetime of being Elvis.

"I've been doing it since I was about 2 years old, to be honest with you," Klush said in a phone interview. "My dad was a DJ in the '50s."

As Klush grew older and being a tribute artist became a career, he learned how to transform himself physically into the King.

"I use a basic make-up scheme. I don't highlight anything (in particular)," he said.

Most of his attention goes to keeping fit.

"My weight plays a big factor, so it goes up and down. I ain't getting any younger," he said with a laugh.

As far as how he gets into the spirit of the King, that just comes naturally, he said.

"I just stand up there and do what I do."

Elvis won’t leave this building

May 24, 2008
By Vidya Prabhu

Clad in jeans and a tee, Stephen Kabakos looks like a regular Canadian. And while he is certainly one, there’s more to him than just that - and his sideburns are the biggest giveaway to this Elvis Presley ‘tribute artist’. “If you think that I always wanted to do this, you are wrong. Yes, I grew up listening to Elvis, so much so that he was like a family member. I would also impersonate him in family functions but that was that. Until 1996, when I first went for an Elvis festival in Ontario. In fact, I was studying design back then. But when I saw a tribute artist pull off a cool act in an Elvis avatar, I wondered ‘Hey, why don’t I do that myself?’,” recounts Stephen, who has even been crowned a world champion at such a contest in Tennessee, America.

Ever since, it’s been a whirlwind journey for Stephen who has toured the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Bangkok and China. Not surprisingly, this is his first visit to the country and Mumbai is the last stop on his India tour, part of Black Dog’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

So were there any surprises in store for him? “Well I have to admit that I didn’t anticipate such a huge Elvis fan following here. I mean, I’m told Guwahati is a smaller town compared to say Mumbai or Delhi, but the audiences there knew the most obscure Elvis songs which even an avid Elvis fan might not!” enthuses Stephen, who has never met anybody from Elvis’s family but has worked with many who have. “For one, I got to work with DJ Fontana, who used to be Elvis’s drummer in the 50’s - apart from the Jordannaires, the 1970’s bassist Jerry Sheff and the singing trio Sweet Inspirations,” he says, adding that he’s also met other Elvis tribute artists, who - according to him - number over 30,000!

So what’s the highlight of his career? “Well, the best part has been impressing the skeptics. There are scores of Elvis fans who’d say that they never want to see a tribute artist’s performance as it can never get as close to the original. But guess what - I have actually had a lot of them watch my show and tell me that they are glad they came! Now isn’t that a great feeling?” he asks with a wink. We couldn’t agree more.

Elvis impersonator's thanks for saving girl

By Staff Copy

An Elvis impersonator is to hold a show to raise funds for the hospital which treated his daughter after she fell down stairs.
Alan Moore, of Nottingham Road, Codnor, said care daughter Natalie received after the fall was remarkable.

Natalie was treated in Nottingham Queen's Medical Centre's Intensive Care Unit. Mr Moore said: "We were told that she had a fractured neck and severe brain swelling, which they said twice she would not survive the night."

Natalie, 39, had three brain operations to remove blood clots and a small area of her brain. She is now in hospital making steady progress, and the signs are looking very good.

He said: "We do not know what the future holds in store for us. But what we do know is that this fantastic Dr Ashpole and his brilliant team at the QMC Intensive Care unit saved my daughter's life that night for which all the family will forever be eternally greatful."

The Elvis Presley Tribute show will be on June 6 at Riddings Community Centre, Willoughby Road, Scunthorpe, South Humberside, UK

Hotel Info For Toronto in October - RE: Jamie Aaron Kelley Show

*This information below is for all persons that have plans to attend the JAMIE AARON KELLEY Concert in Toronto, this coming October... :) *IMPORTANT*

----- Original Message -----
From: Ronda

Hello Everyone !! :)

Below is the info on the Hotel we arranged a group rate with. I have been there personally to see the Hotel and rooms, and it is beautiful! Wonderful restaurants inside, shops etc. Exercise room,
pool, even a great area for kids. They are willing to give us this rate for the Fri/Sat night Oct 24 & 25th. However I know some people are planning to stay an extra few days - simply ask the reservations desk if they are able to extend this rate or what is the best price they can give you. Sometimes you can get a further discount if you are a SENIOR or have a AAA membership - don't forget to mention that, as well.

There are some local hotels that are a bit cheaper, but I viewed them, and they weren't in the best area, or were not that clean. I know I would not have been happy staying there so I didn't feel comfortable endorsing them. Of course you are more than welcome to book wherever you would like - but I have set up the best rate I can get with this hotel, and I assure you it is a great hotel.

Here is the info for booking the room:

We are pleased to confirm special rates for October 24/25, 2008 program as outlined below:

Delta Room
133.00

Premier Room
153.00

FOR Signature Club Rooms & Deluxe Rooms please inquire

Please note your block of rooms is in the Delta Room category. A limited number of alternate room types may be available during your program dates. Confirmation of rooms will be on an availability and request basis.

TAXES / FEES

Currently room rates are subject to the following taxes:

2) Federal Goods and Services Tax 5%
3) Destination Marketing Fee 3%

Please note that the above taxes and fees may change without notice.

ADDITIONAL ROOM OCCUPANTS

Each extra person sharing a room will be charged an additional $20.00 per night. There will be no charge for children up to and including the age of 18 years who share with their parents. Maximum occupancy per room is 3 (three) adults.

SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT

We are pleased to provide a smoke-free environment. This includes all public areas, restaurants, meeting rooms and guestrooms. For the benefit of all our guests, we request that they kindly refrain from smoking in the hotel. If guests wish to smoke, they are welcome to visit any of the designated smoking areas provided, in accordance with current provincial legislation. If a guest chooses to smoke in their guest room, we will have to carry out a rigorous deep-cleaning

CHECK IN/CHECK OUT TIMES

Check-in time is 3:00 P.M. Every effort is made to accommodate guests arriving before the check-in time, however rooms may not be immediately available. Check out time is 11:00 A.M. Requests to check out time after 3:00 P.M. should be directed to the Assistant Front Office Manager, on the day of departure, once the participant is registered. Should it be possible to extend a late check out, a late departure charge may be applicable.

RESERVATION PROCEDURES

Lost Elvis photos going on display at Graceland

May 22, 2008

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Recently rediscovered photos of Elvis Presley performing in New York City in 1972 are going on display at Graceland.

Managers of the Graceland tourist complex at Presley's former Memphis residence say they are putting the photos on display beginning Friday at their Sincerely Elvis Museum.

George Kalinsky, a photographer for Madison Square Garden for 40 years, said he discovered the pictures while working on a billboard project called "Great Moments in New York."

The pictures, taken by Kalinsky, show Presley performing in a white jumpsuit and cape.

Graceland managers say 20 of the photos will be displayed for the first time in public as part of an exhibit called "Elvis Jumpsuits: All Access."

Pictured: Mini-Graceland created by an Elvis fan in Lancashire that was 24 years in the making

Visitors to property developer John Turner's home are all shook up within seconds of walking through his front door.

For the Elvis-mad music fan's house is a shrine to the King.

John has taken 24 years to create his very own version of Graceland - in Leigh, Lancashire, and Elvis Presley memorabilia adorns every wall.

John has been a dedicated Elvis fan since he was 15 and his love and loyalty for the icon has never wavered.

Gotta read rest of the article - and see the pictures of his place, I think his place is pretty awesome! :) http://preview.tinyurl.com/5a8dso

Vegas comes to Strathpine

Image hosted by servimg.com

Allee Katz Rock ‘n’ Roll Dancers Allan Eyears and Gary
and Sandy Wilks, with Moreton Bay Regional Council’s
Kathy Morgan, are revved up about Saturday’s Rodz
Rock ‘n’ Roll event at Strathpine.

May 22, 2008

Rock ‘n’ rollers of all ages will put on their blue suede shoes this Saturday to ensure there’s a “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” at Strathpine.
The Rodz, Rock ‘n’ Roll concert will take local groovers back in time to an era of jukeboxes, diner cafés and drive-in movies with the Legends In Concert show.

Renowned Las Vegas performers Dean Z and Lance Lipinsky, who made their Australian performing debuts at last year’s Rodz, Rock ‘n’ Roll event, will return to Strathpine to belt out the hits of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Dean Z portrays Elvis Presley as he was during the Sun Studios Era of the mid-1950s – the formative years that helped to create the king of rock ‘n’ roll.

Adding weight to his standing as one of America’s best rock star impersonators, Lipinsky performed with Jerry Lee Lewis’ band at Lewis’ 67th birthday party as a 19-year-old.

Joining Lipinsky and Dean Z on stage to take audiences back five decades will be fellow Vegas performer Bobby Brookes Hamilton, the son of legendary R&B hit maker Jackie Wilson, in his guise as the “architect of rock ‘n’ roll”, Little Richard.

Local bands The Superlatives, Quick Draw MaGraw, Dudes of Doo Wop and Hi-way 1 will perform from midday, with Legends In Concert on-stage from 6pm.

The free concert at Pine Rivers Park, Gympie Road, Strathpine, Queensland Australia will conclude with fireworks at 9pm.

As well as live music, Rodz, Rock ‘n’ Roll, which is expected to attract 5000 people, will also rev up with a Show and Shine display of more than 200 classic and hot rod cars.

Developer sues cleaner over Elvis photo

May 21, 2008

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., May 21 (UPI) -- A Florida developer who bought the National Enquirer's Boca Raton headquarters is suing a man he claims stole a famous photo of Elvis Presley from the building.

The picture shows the deceased rock 'n' roll icon lying in his coffin. It appeared on the cover of the tabloid weeks after Presley died in 1977. The issue reportedly sold 6.5 million copies.

The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post said developer David Rustine has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court, claiming the grisly photo was stolen by a man he hired to clean the building he bought for $40,000 in 2003, following a 2001 anthrax attack at the Enquirer.

Rustine said he inherited millions of celebrity photos when he bought the Enquirer's headquarters and that the Presley picture was missing when the building reopened in 2007.

The developer said the photo is worth at least $1 million and his lawsuit requests that John Y. Mason, formerly president and chief executive officer of Sabre Technical Services in New York, be forced to surrender it or compensate him for it, the Post said.

In 2004, Sabre and Giuliani Partners formed Bio-One.

Retro: Screaming, crying girls and a pimple-faced boy

Image hosted by servimg.com

Police fended off fans of singer Elvis Presley during his visit to Minnesota
in mid-May 1956. Photo ran Sunday June 3, 1956, in the Minneapolis
Tribune PICTURE MAGAZINE. Photo by staff photographer Powell Krueger.

May 18, 2008

The first time, I was 18," said Ele Sherrard of Plymouth, speaking to a Star Tribune reporter in 2006. "We were nuts, screaming, leaning over the railing, crying. We say 'those crazy kids!' Well, I was one of them," she said, describing her attendance at Elvis Presley's first concert in Minneapolis on May 13, 1956.

After two years of singing and recording, the 21-year-old Presley exploded on the music scene in January of that year with the release of "Heartbreak Hotel," followed by a series of appearances on major TV variety shows.

On May 13 he performed an afternoon show in the St. Paul Auditorium, now Roy Wilkins Auditorium, and an evening show in the Minneapolis Auditorium, which was demolished in 1989 to make way for the Convention Center.

The sizes of the crowds were underwhelming at this early point in Presley's career -- only about 800 fans for the St. Paul show and estimates between 1,300 and 3,000 for the 10,000 seat-Minneapolis Auditorium.

What the crowds lacked in size, they made up for in volume. Will Jones, columnist for the Tribune in Minneapolis, wrote of the St. Paul concert: "Presley faced a sea of empty seats. When the noise started, however, even the empty seats seemed to be screaming."

Jones seemed to be uniformly unimpressed with the new rock 'n' roll phenom, noting, "He has pimples all over the back of his neck, a few on his chin, and a number of nervous facial mannerisms."

None of which seemed to bother Sherrard, as she recalled: "My dad was not happy. It was Mother's Day and he said, 'Why are you going to see that guy, he's wiggling around up there?' Oh, he was something."

Vocal Range and Learning

*Shared with permission*

By ETA Ruben Castillo Highland Park NJ
www.myspace.com/thekingamiproductions

So I just came across a YouTube video that shows Elvis' vocal range. As a student of music, it amazes me what a range Elvis had without being a trained singer. I've met some vocal teachers that cringe when I say that I'm a tribute artist, especially an Elvis Tribute Artist. I have to say that I'm proud to be an ETA and proud that I have this vocal range that I can do the range of songs that Elvis did.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ0Rhm59vsY

I've done a lot of learning my first full year as an ETA.

1. You can always change up your style, no matter what age/size/color/height you are. I was always afraid that people would criticize me about being overweight or too old to do songs from the fifties or sixties. Well, I changed it up July of last year and I think it was the best thing I've ever done. Change is good!

2. Unlearn what you've learned and the student will be come the master. Being a musical theater actor most of my life, I had to project my voice and sing in a certain style similar to opera where the voice is truly treated as a musical instrument. There's a video of me from February of 2007 when I started out in the business on YouTube an I'm leaving it there to see how much I've changed my vocals since then. I was all about power power power then. Then I started studying the way Elvis opened his mouth...what a difference!

3. Always, ALWAYS treat everyone with respect no matter who they are. I've met a lot of really nice people in this business and I've encountered some real jerks. Sure, I'd wanna give the jerks a piece of my mind, but as was said in "The Godfather": Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. They'll soon learn they're missing out.
AND Always, ALWAYS acknowledge your fellow performer, no matter who you are. Last year at a gig that I was performing at, the ETA who went on before me really didn't acknowledge me or that I was doing a set right after him. Some people started to leave...Thanks a lot pal! So, during my set I went out of my way to acknowledge not only the ETA that was coming after me, but also the other Tribute Artist in the audience who became a dear friend of mine. Be generous, be grateful, be courteous, and be a gentleman.

4. Be a ETA Counselor. It's a lonely world for an Tribute Artist. We're always being judged and compared to other Tribute Artists, not against the one we are paying tribute to, Elvis. To that end, support some fellow ETAs out there, whether they are the local guy who works at a gas station or the Vegas Corporate guy. Make them your friends, because frankly, no one knows what we go through but our family (if their supportive) and other ETAs. I invite anyone to contact me to talk or seek some advice. And while on this topic, I learned something else this year about comparing and competing. When I go to a contest, I think of "how can I best showcase my talents so that I give the best possible performance ever" rather than how can I beat this guy. Sure, someone might be thinner, taller, have better voice, better moves...but they aren't me. So, with this way of thinking, I'll always be a winner! So let them have their moment in the sun...I'll have mine too.

5. Give them everything you've got, no matter how big or small of a crowd. We've all been there...we've played to hundreds, maybe thousands, and then we've played to a room of 10 to 15. I had an experience this past October where I had just come from two great venues and then I played to two venues that I would say were not "Elvis Friendly". Be that as it may, those two places I didn't give them my all and it showed. I became the tribute artist I loathed, that played to the emotions of the crowd (or lack of emotion) and I felt like lethargic. Make sure that each and every time you are on stage, you are ELECTRIC and CHARISMATIC and always smiling! Give it 120% and it will pay off...I did it the next gig and the crowd and myself were utterly satisfied!

I know that I'm pretty adamant and wordy when it comes to entertainment. Some people are of little words and just do what they do. But I believe in education for the common good. I'm not out there to think I'm better than my fellow ETA. I just like to express myself so that maybe others will take something from it and use it and pass it along to others.

Till next time

Ruben

Whatever happened to the Elvis impersonator growing his business

Image hosted by servimg.com

May 18, 2008
By Michael Kruse

THE STORY: Hernando County Elvis impersonator Kenny Grube, rubber-burning rebel turned family man, traveled to Birmingham, Ala., in his 1993 Winnebago Warrior motor home with his wife, Stephanie, and his daughters, Siobhan and Kaitlyn, for his first out-of-state competition against other Elvises. Winner got $1,000 and a coveted spot in the Images of the King contest during Elvis week in Memphis.

Twelve minutes.

Three songs.

One big chance.

FROM THE STORY: "What do they say? When you quit something, being great was right around the corner?" he says. "But right now Elvis is my bread and butter."

That started in November '03, when he put on a gold suit and emceed an event at Spring Hill's Music Bum store. A lark. Then came singing telegrams and school functions and dinner parties. Stephanie works full time as the marketing director for an assisted living facility. But Kenny can make $650 to $1,000 a week, doing three, even four shows a weekend, at $250 an hour. Last year, Stephanie says, Kenny earned about $15,000.

"By the remarks that people have said, I think it's a good enough show to make it really big," Kenny says. In the motor home, a plastic Elvis dangles from the rearview mirror and shakes with the bumps along the way.

"If it's just good enough to stay in Central Florida, that's okay, too, but I believe we could get really big."

It's getting wee-hours late, and the cab gets quiet somewhere south of Tallahassee, where the road is long and dark and the bright lights come only every once in a while.

THE REST OF THE STORY: The economy might be down, but the Elvis business is good, and getting better, according to Grube.

"More and more gigs," he said in a recent phone conversation. "It's full time now. It's all I'm doing."

He has done the Tampa Elvis Festival.

In Hernando and Citrus counties, he performs for the Michigan Club in Spring Hill, the Italian-American Club in Crystal River, sometimes two, three assisted living facilities a day. He has standing gigs at the outlet mall on U.S. 19 in Spring Hill and at the popular Coney Island hot dog place in Brooksville.

"Just bringing smiles to people's faces," he said.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: Grube's Elvis show is becoming a family business. Wife Stephanie does marketing and booking. Daughter Siobhan helps run the lights and the mixing board. And Kaitlyn, the younger daughter, does her part by dancing it up.

"We all do it together," Grube said.

He also hopes at some point to add a backup band to his repertoire.

"To try to get some bigger fairs and festivals," he said, "be the main act."

Cliff Richard regrets not meeting fat Elvis

Sunday, May 18, 2008 21:20 [IST]
London: British singer Sir Cliff Richard regrets not taking up the opportunity to meet legendary singer Elvis Presley because he was too fat.

Though Richard was a huge fan of the rock 'n roll star, he didn't want to take a picture with an obese Elvis because he thought he would get another chance in future when he became thinner, reports contactmusic.com.

Richard said: "The big regret is when I had the chance to meet him in America, I chose not to because he was going through a really big, fat...he was grotesquely overweight.

"They kept saying they wanted a photograph of me and Elvis and I thought, 'Hang on, I don't want to have that Elvis with me on my wall - I'd rather have the magnificent Elvis that everybody knows and loves'. I said, 'If we wait long enough, he does movies and he goes on these fantastic diets, then we can have a picture of me with my idol looking like my idol'. Now I really regret it. I'd rather have met him overweight than never."

Barbara Leigh's Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen Memoir

Image hosted by servimg.com

May 14, 2008

In 1967 Barbara Leigh was a naïve 19-year-old who moved from the Deep South to Southern California. Five years later she was a world-class model, a rising Hollywood starlet and juggled three of the entertainment industry's most powerful figures of the 1970s – Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen and James “The Smiling Cobra” Aubrey – all at the same time.

Leigh's relationships with these three legendary figures is the basis of The King, McQueen and the Love Machine, a 2002 memoir that is now the first dramatized autobiography in the history of audio books.

In this three-CD set, Barbara Leigh reads her autobiography and performs the dramatizations with Joe Esposito, Elvis Presley's right hand man; David Hedison in the role of Jim Aubrey and Tim Tomerson as Steve McQueen. Giving “The King” the royal treatment in this mesmerizing two-hour and forty-five minute presentation is Paul Casey, one of the world's best known Elvis Presley Tribute Artists.

From 1970 to 1972, Barbara Leigh and Elvis Presley embarked on a torrid love affair from the moment they locked eyes. Leigh, whose smoldering looks and stunning beauty embodied the naturalistic seventies and captured the King's heart at the same time. Add to this mix an affair with Steve McQueen, the world's number-one box-office attraction, and Jim Aubrey, president of MGM studios and the inspiration for Jacqueline Susan's The Love Machine.

The King, McQueen and the Love Machine is much more than a catchy title; Barbara Leigh takes listeners on a roller-coaster ride through the heady '70s as she juggles her relationships with three of Hollywood's most powerful and influential icons while pursuing her career as an actress and model.

From her poverty-stricken childhood through to the privileged lifestyle of a Hollywood starlet, coupled with life's unexpected challenges, Barbara Leigh has experienced more than most will ever experience in several life times. It is a true story of a woman's survival in a predominantly male world.

Barbara Leigh was the original Warren comic book character for Vampirella. She was featured in two Playboy layouts, appeared in more than 50 commercials as well as 10 feature films, including Sam Peckinpah's Junior Bonner and Roger Vadim's Pretty Maids All in a Row.

Paul Casey, world famous Elvis Tribute Artist, plays the part of The King.

Tim Thomerson, one of the most naturalistic actors of his generation (Air America, Uncommon Valor, Volunteers), gives an uncanny performance as Steve McQueen.

Veteran actor David Hedison (The Fly, The Lost World, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea), performs the part of MGM president and main love interest, James Aubrey – The Love Machine.

Joe Esposito introduces the book as well as plays himself in the dramatization.

Each CD has a different photo of Barbara Leigh and includes a personally hand-signed photo inside the beautiful shrink wrapped case.

DJ Fontana was Elvis' drummer for 14 years and was inducted into the 'Rockabilly Hall of Fame,' for playing on over 460 RCA record cuts with Elvis.

In October 1954 he was hired to play the drums for Presley, marking the beginning of an extraordinary relationship.

He also appeared on many radio broadcasts and performed with Elvis on NBC Television in his 1968 comeback special.

Since Elvis' death, Fontana has continued to work with original lead guitarist Scotty Moore and recorded "That's All Right (Mama)" with Sir Paul McCartney in 2002.

Maria star Fisher lands TV role

Sound of Music star Connie Fisher is to make her TV drama debut in a new film for ITV1.

The 24-year-old, who won the BBC's How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, will play an Elvis Presley-obsessed parking warden in Caught in a Trap.

Fisher, who went on to play Maria Von Trapp on stage, said she was "thrilled" to have been cast in the drama.

Shooting has started on the film, which also stars Jim Carter, Geraldine James and ex-EastEnders actor Joe Absolom.

Stealing

Fisher plays Gemma Perkins, who lives with her father and overbearing step-mother and has a boring and low paid job emptying car park meters.

But her life takes a dramatic turn when she starts dipping into cash from the parking meters to fund her obsession with Elvis Presley, giving her a thrill she has never felt before.

Producer Jill Green said: "Connie has more than proved herself as an actress in her role as Maria in The Sound of Music. We thought she would be perfect for the role of Gemma Perkins in Caught in a Trap.

"Connie has a vulnerability about her and an interesting face which betrays a range of emotions which we require for this role. She has an accessibility, and is a person we can all relate to."

Looking

King-of-the-Hill Productions is now looking for an tribute artist to promote for events which we receive inquiries from pertaining to an Elvis Show with full costumes for the various era's. We prefer someone who can pull off all eras and do not promote shows using multiple performers doing various eras, that's been done far too often. We will consider individuals who pertain to the various eras but who do not do all eras. However, it all depends on the talent of the individual.
We prefer to work with someone fairly new to the process yet with the vocal talent, image identification at least similar to Elvis. If interested, send pictures, video, age, height, weight, etc. to:

Phyllis Presley

A good friend passed on this info to me:

I don't know if you knew her or not, but a lot of the ETA'S that go to Memphis did. She owned Gary Peppers house for a number of years. And had moved to New Jersey. You may want to pass along the information that she died on May 8. Apparently she had some complications following surgery. She was in Levington, New Jersey with her son. I believe the service will held tomorrow.

Pineapple dressesd as Elvis wins local 'Idol' contest

Jacob Kilar, 9, of Greenacres, is the first place winner of the "Pineapple Idol" contest held at Hand's Stationers in downtown Delray Beach. Kilar won $100 in cash for his pineapple dubbed "The King" (Forum Publishing Group / Kimberli DiMare / May 8, 2008)

By David DiPino Forum Publishing Group

DELRAY BEACH – Jacob Kilar, 9, of Greenacres bought a pineapple at a local grocery store then spent three days transforming the spiny fruit into "The King," Elvis Presley. His effort resulted in a $100 bill Jacob said he will put into his savings account.

Jacob was the winner of the first annual "Pineapple Idol" sponsored by Hand's Stationer's. A dozen people entered pineapples in the competition.

And the flavorful fruit was transformed to mimic everyone from Elvis to Bob Marley to Harry Potter. Themed pineapples represented Marti Gras, a Surfer Girl, a princess, a flip flop and a rocket, all of which were on display Thursday May 8 in front of Hand's, 325 E. Atlantic Ave.

A call-in number allowed patrons at Jazz on the Avenue to cast their votes for their favorite pineapples. Hand's employees tallied the votes.

"We received 247 calls," said employee Liz Hughes, who created the "Pineapple Idol" contest.

Kilar's winning entry consisted of Elvis with his trademark black locks, 1970's-era shades and his familiar flattop wooden acoustic guitar.

"You have to host great events to draw customers," said David Cook, manager of Hand's.

Elvis' Generosity

Article by Theresa Hughes

Elvis Presley was a generous man. Not only to those who worked for him, his family and friends, but often to strangers and regular gifts to charities, both national and local. Christmas time every year Elvis would donate around $100,000 to organized charities.

Some of Elvis's generous gifts donated to charities would become public knowledge , but the rest of the donations were only known to a hand full of people, who were directly involved in the life of Elvis Presley.

These generous gifts in total, annually would reach a figure of 2 million dollars during the period of Elvis's life when he was able to distribute that amount of money to organized charities.

There were also some small gifts generously given, one of which went to a crippled lady. Elvis personally delivered a brand new wheelchair.

Large and small amounts were generously given to relatives, friends and those who worked for him were also very much considered, with motorcycles, Cadillac's, horses, trucks and cash gifts, TCB and TLC necklaces were a symbolized gift given to the guys who worked for him and their wives, identification bracelets and Christmas gifts.

Bonuses were considered as a small part of his generosity.
Elvis offered many wonderful gifts to his family and friends. His generosity at times would involve building a beautiful new home for his father Vernon and wife Dee.

Elvis bought Joe Esposito a house in California. He gave Jerry Schilling $30,000 to buy a home also in California. He had given a $50,000 cheque to the Motion Picture Relief Fund Home and Hospital. This large amount was one of the largest ever given and was accepted on behalf of the Hospital, by Frank Sinatra.
When it came to a special occasion, like Weddings. Elvis had great joy in these occasions. He picked up the expenses for Joe Esposito and Jenny Schilling wedding in 1970.

There were also others, Elvis paid for Dick Grobs wedding. Then his wedding gift to Dick and Marilyn was a new automobile.
George Klein was the next in line, George asked Elvis to be his best man. Elvis proudly accepted, offering to pay for the wedding and reception in Las Vegas.

All arrangements were made for the wedding to take place on the top floor of the Hilton, it was Elvis' suite, which was beautifully decorated for the wedding. The catering was also organized for the reception.

Then all expense paid first class flights were arranged for the 15 couples being present.

Elvis Presley's sincere generosity came from deep within, giving to others whether in his music to his fans or giving donations to selected organizations.

His personal gifts to those he loved, was his way of sincere thanks to those who loved him.
